What Counts as a Roofing Emergency

Call right away when:

Damage with no water inside yet is still worth a call. Water can get into the roof deck or the attic before it shows on a ceiling. Describe what you see, and we will tell you whether it needs a repair right away or can be booked as a normal roof repair.

What to Do Before We Get There

If anyone is in danger, call 911 first. That includes a ceiling or roof that may collapse, a fire, or power lines down on or near the house. Leave the area by a safe route. Stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines and anything they touch, and call your electricity utility.

Stay off the roof. A wet, icy or storm-damaged roof is not safe to walk on, and a damaged deck may not hold your weight.

  1. Keep people out from under a sagging ceiling. Water can collect above the drywall and bring it down.
  2. Keep away from water near electricity. If water is near a light fixture or an outlet, switch off that circuit at the panel only if you can reach the panel on a dry floor and the panel itself is dry. Do not walk through standing water to get to it. If you cannot do it safely, leave the area and call your electricity utility or an electrician.
  3. Catch the water where it is safe. Away from wet electrical items and not under a sagging ceiling, put down buckets and towels, and move furniture and rugs out of the way. Do not touch plugs, outlets or electrical items that water has reached. Have an electrician check them before you use them again.
  4. Take photos. Photograph the ceiling, the wet areas and any damage you can see on the roof from the ground. If you make an insurance claim, the photos help.
  5. Call us. Once everyone is safe, tell us where the water is coming in and what happened: wind, a tree, a thaw or heavy rain.

Emergency Repairs We Do

Storm and Wind Damage

Wind often lifts shingles at the edges and the ridge, and a single torn-off section can let rain straight onto the roof deck. We replace the missing shingles, ridge caps and vents and tie the repair into the shingles around it so water runs off in the right order. Read why fast repairs matter after storm damage.

Roof Leak Repair

Water often does not come through the ceiling right under the hole. It can run along the deck or the rafters before it drips. We trace the leak back to its source, often a flashing joint, a pipe boot or a vent, and repair the source, not only the wet spot. For the full method, see how a roof leak is traced.

Ice Dam Leaks

In a thaw, ice at the eaves can hold back meltwater and push it under the shingles. We repair the damaged roof. Ice dams often start with house heat warming the roof. Warm air leaking into the attic is a common cause, so attic insulation and ventilation help, and air sealing the ceiling below the attic may also be needed.

Damaged Roof Deck

When water has run for a while, or a branch has gone through the roof, the plywood under the shingles can be soft or broken. We cut out the bad boards and replace them before new shingles go on. See roof plywood replacement.

Metal Roof Repair

We also repair metal roofs. Tell us when you call that the roof is metal.

After the Emergency

Once the leak has stopped, it is worth checking the condition of the whole roof. If the damage is in one place and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair is usually the right answer. If the shingles are worn across the roof, or it keeps leaking in new places, we will tell you, and a roof replacement may cost less over time than repeated emergency repairs.

If you plan to claim on your home insurance, read roof repair and your insurance deductible first.

Emergency Roof Repair Questions

Do you do emergency roof repair in Wasaga Beach?

Yes. We do emergency roof repair in Wasaga Beach, and in Stayner, Collingwood and the rest of Simcoe County and Southern Georgian Bay. See our roof repair in Wasaga Beach page.

Can you fix a roof leak in the winter?

Yes. We work through the winter, and leaks after a thaw are common winter calls. Some repairs need dry, mild weather to finish properly, and we will tell you what can be done now and what should wait.

What should I tell you when I call?

Your address, where the water is coming in, and what happened (wind, a tree, a thaw or rain). If anyone is in danger, call 911 first. Photos from the ground help us see the damage before we arrive.

Is it safe to go on the roof to look?

No. Stay on the ground. Look from the ground or from a window, and take photos. A roofer has the right equipment to check a damaged roof safely.
